Partnership Beyond Technology: How Collaboration Helped Secure the Future of a Zinc Operation

Mining operations around the world are facing increasing pressure to maximise the performance of existing tailings storage facilities. As facilities approach capacity, operators are often forced to consider costly infrastructure expansions, operational restrictions, or, in some cases, reduced production.
For one of Nexa's zinc operations, tailings storage capacity had become a critical challenge that required action.
The implications extended beyond the technical performance of the tailings facility. The operation plays an important role in supporting local employment, economic activity, and the broader community that relies on the mine. Maintaining a sustainable pathway for continued operation was therefore a priority for all stakeholders involved.
Recognising the challenge, Nexa partnered with Phibion to implement Accelerated Mechanical Consolidation (AMC™) technology within the tailings storage facility.
Rather than relying on major infrastructure upgrades or disruptive construction activities, AMC™ works directly within the tailings deposit to accelerate dewatering and consolidation. This process improves tailings density, increases available storage capacity, and enhances operational flexibility within the existing footprint.
However, the success of the project was not driven by technology alone.
The outcome was made possible through a strong working relationship between the Nexa and Phibion teams.
Close collaboration, shared objectives, and a commitment to delivering measurable results enabled both organisations to develop a practical solution tailored to the site's specific requirements.
The project successfully created additional storage capacity, helping support the ongoing operation of the mine while reducing pressure on future tailings management requirements.
Most importantly, it helped provide confidence for the future of an operation that supports local jobs, families, contractors, and the surrounding community.
This project demonstrates that successful tailings management is about more than engineering outcomes. It is about creating sustainable solutions that support mining operations, protect communities, and deliver long-term value.
At Phibion, we are proud to work alongside customers such as Nexa to help transform tailings challenges into opportunities for safer, more sustainable, and more productive mining operations
