Making tracks in Brasil

Updated: Mar 8, 2021

Mineração Rio do Norte S.A. (MRN) operates the largest bauxite mine in Brazil. Phibion Brasil has signed a five year contract with MRN to provide Accelerated Mechanical Consolidation (AMC) services at its Trombetas mine in the State of Para, Brazil.

The recently released Global Tailings Standard has compelled the mining industry and the investment community to reassess how tailings are managed. Phibion has been engaged by MRN to improve the sustainability of the existing bauxite tailings management system by increasing water recovery, tailings density and strength. The application of AMC will enable these improvements without any capital expenditure or changes in operational management.

Operationally, the AMC process will be managed by a fleet of MudMasters®. The newly assembled fleet are being manufactured and shipped directly from Brisbane, Australia and operated by our growing Phibion Brasil team. Our Phibion experts are providing training in safe MudMaster® operations and advanced AMC techniques.

Phibion Managing Director, Mr. David Smirk said “MRN are to be applauded for their vision and commitment to deliver the very best tailings management solution for the company. This development allows Phibion to bring AMC technology and Australian advanced manufacturing to the people of Brazil. To accommodate this development, we have expanded our Brisbane manufacturing facility and are providing significant new supply contracts to our key local suppliers. We look forward to a long and productive working relationship with our MRN partners.”

Phibion is a tailings management company providing services to the mining industry with offices in Australia, Jamaica, Chile and Brazil. The company invented and deploys Accelerated Mechanical Consolidation (AMC) technology utilising its MudMaster® Archimedes Screw Tractor vehicles to reduce tailings volumes and deliver enhanced water recovery, increased tailings density and strength. Our unique approach makes tailings dams safer, smaller and sustainable.
